Adding a Challenge to a Challenge

Day 1 of 100

If this project was going to have value, I needed to let go of constraints and let the project go where it wanted. I started to notice that I went right to the same style every time I sat down to create. Call it strata or abstract landscape, but there were stripes of color and texture in each collage. They were pretty, but I wasn’t learning anything new.

Then, at the same time that I was doing the 100 Day Project, I decided to take a six week Abstract Composition course with Melinda Tidwell. This meant that I was learning about the structure of a composition, creating pieces for critique and still trying to keep up with my daily collage post. Yikes.

I did learn new things and I had to let go of my original plan because there was no way I could continue with neat four inch squares when I was learning about grids and white space. My collages had to grow both in size and complexity.

The last twenty-five days were the longest because I was tired! I’m not sure I want to do this length of challenge again any time soon. It was hard to post a quote and a collage every day when there were other things going on (pandemic, teaching, home and family...all that stuff). My work got so much better by the end and I gained a lot of new followers on Instagram. I had a supportive community cheering me on and sharing my work, which is a great feeling.
