Collage, Printmaking, and Writing

2026 In-Person Workshops

I teach in-person workshops in abstract collage, letterpress printing, and writing for artists — at art centers, galleries, and studios across New England and beyond. Each workshop is hands-on and unhurried, designed for artists at any level who want to work with vintage materials, learn to print with wooden type, or find their way through a creative block. Upcoming workshops are listed below.

Abstract Collage and Printmaking with Vintage Papers

In this hands-on workshop, you'll explore the intersection of letterpress printmaking and abstract collage using vintage materials.

We'll begin with printmaking, using wooden type and vintage papers to create layered letterpress prints. You'll also learn how to replicate the warmth and texture of the letterpress look using a gelli plate — no press required.

From there, we'll turn to composition. Drawing inspiration from abstract artists, you'll develop your eye for color balance, layering, and arrangement as you transform your fresh prints into collages with vintage papers.

By the end of the day, you'll leave with a collection of original collages that are entirely your own.

What the Materials Know: A Workshop in the Found and the Made

This three-day workshop moves through a complete arc: from raw material to finished work. Day 1 is entirely about generating: using gelli plate printing, letterpress, and other mixed-media techniques to alter vintage papers and ephemera. Days 2 and 3 are about learning to use what you've made. Focused composition lessons lead directly into sketchbook practice and open studio work on cradled wood panels. Private writing prompts run through each day — not journaling, but a way of paying attention to your own process. You leave with finished work and a framework you can take back to your studio.

Make a Beautiful Mess

A Day of Guided Experiments in Mixed-Media

August 18th 10 am -3 pm

A single day of permission to play. Students cycle through techniques — gelli plate printing, marbling, letterpress printing, monoprinting, and mark-making — experimenting freely with whatever paper they bring or find at their table. There is no “right” result. The point is to observe what the materials do and create lots of collage papers.

Students make a simple pamphlet book at the start of the day. By the end, they will fill it with trimmed paper samples and handwritten technique notes — a reference they can return to in their own studios.

No collage. No finished piece. Just a day of making messes, keeping notes, and leaving with something worth keeping.

I offer half-day, full-day, and multi-session workshops in abstract collage, letterpress printing with vintage wooden type, and writing for artists. I've taught at art centers, galleries, online, and at community studios throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and I'm always interested in new venues and partnerships.
