Repurposing

While looking through drawers for materials and supplies to use in the online class I’m creating, I found some stamps I’d carved into soft rubber blocks.

Old me would have taken the stamp and ink pad and covered the page with layered prints in different colors with an end result that was more pattern design than original art.

Old me would have carved another stamp.

Instead, I found a way to add the stamp to an abstract collage. Working in my current style, in my sketchbook, the stamp became a small addition l to the composition, rather than the main event.

After you watch this video, have a look at the back and bottom of your drawers, shelves and bins, and see what parts of your old art practice could be included in your new work.

And thanks to Ellie of Petalplum for her Instagram comment on old/new self that inspired this writing. (side note- her newsletter is excellent!)

There’s no audio- it’s just me at work, trying out ideas.
