<image:caption>The timing worked out perfectly. My studio gets cold in winter, and I'd just found a small ledger book at an estate sale with a metal five-ring binding. I cut Bristol down to fit inside it and had a portable little art journal I could carry with me to warmer parts of the house.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Vintage Papers for Letterpress Printing and Collage - Storage</image:title>
<image:caption>The second most frequently asked question is how to store and organize all these papers.I wish I had a perfectly organized system, but we all know there isn’t one. It changes as your work and collections change. I sort by type: book pages together, sheet music in one place, ledger papers together, and maps together. Within those categories, things are fairly random. I store them all in flat files, but archival paper storage boxes work well, too, and they take up less space. I used to keep mine under the bed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Seed Journal - Filming my next online class has been at the top of my list since I completed the lesson plans this past July. And while some progress has been made, it stalled because I had an idea.</image:title>
<image:caption>An idea that had me working in the studio, creating four new pieces, rather than filming, because inspiration comes infrequently.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I purchased two unusual blocks for letterpress printing. One is a plastic reproduction of the front piece of an old book, attached to a wooden base to raise it to a suitable height for printing. The second piece was an ornate brass design that had been soldered onto lead spacers for use on a press.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Back from the trip, I was excited to see how these treasures printed and soon had a studio table covered in a mix of decent prints and experiments, most of which were on pages from old books, but some were on papers from a vintage Hallmark stationery set.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Everything on the Barrow: A London-Inspired Collage</image:title>
<image:caption>I decided to use them right away, so I chose a panel that was already prepped (read more about that process here) and covered the surface with the less interesting prints. Even as I began, I was thinking about composition, so I laid it out in a way that took advantage of the details of these (I suppose) failed prints, and also started to think about how I could set up the composition as I continued. The base layer had a 50/50 split of quiet and loud areas, and this was my revision challenge.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I had a piece of linen that I had stitched with cotton thread on my Featherweight, and a book cover that I had been saving forever, which said "Library" on it. These became the anchor points of the composition and added some interest to the quiet half.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At my work table, I have a box of lovely book cover fabric, and I selected calm colors, and some abstracted text details. Then, I ran out of ideas and could not figure out my next steps. I needed to take a break. I had all these loose threads, the strong left-hand side, the strong right-hand side, and a middle that was a little bare.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Everything on the Barrow: A London-Inspired Collage</image:title>
<image:caption>I walked around for a while, had some lunch, and then came back down to the studio with my new stamps in hand, having spotted them on my desk while answering an email. These were another purchase from London (from Present and Correct). I’m hesitant to add marks onto an almost finished piece for fear of making a mess, but I was wondering if I could add some circular elements to balance out the other circles already in the piece. Instead, I added squares and ended up covering most of them as they lined up too neatly with the stitched circles.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I was on a mission to make myself a proper cup of tea and have it, with biscuits, in the early afternoon, all because someone on Instagram told me it was better this way. I used to have tea parties for my friends, where we would drink tea out of china, and use the silver service, but it had been a while. Afternoon tea sounded like the perfect way to transition from working to afternoons with my son.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Habits that Keep an Art Practice Moving - Cleaning</image:title>
<image:caption>On my weekly task list, I include two cleaning tasks. I move lots of files around on my computer, and I’ll forget why they are on my desktop unless I file them away each week. My desk also ends up with piles of bills, lesson plans, new work, and notebooks and I can’t look at that chaos, so that has to be dealt with (usually on Friday). I tidy up a little bit each time I work in my studio, but by the end of the week, the trash bin is overflowing and there are odd piles stacking up (especially if my son has been down there with me). It only takes a few minutes to move things back into place, and it feels so good to start with a clean space on Monday.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Habits that Keep an Art Practice Moving - Art</image:title>
<image:caption>When my week has been heavy with art business tasks, and light on creative time, I make sure to spend some time working in my sketchbook. I take photographs all day long: documenting works in progress, moments of inspiration, bits of video and anything that might serve me later for newsletters, blogs, and social media. My notebook travels to the studio with me, and I record ideas and observations in my Daybook.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Art Business and Creativity Book Recommendations - I’ve intended to write this blog post for a year, but it seemed like a lot of work because I’ve read a lot of business books and putting them together, with summaries and my opinions on each, is a massive undertaking.</image:title>
<image:caption>And that gets to the point of why an art business is overwhelming- because there are endless tasks, more ideas than you’ll have time for, something new to learn every week…. and somehow, during all this work, you’ll need to be making art!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Studio Organization Mistakes That Are Hurting Your Creative Flow (And How to Fix Them) - Mistake #1: Organizing Everything at Once</image:title>
<image:caption>The Problem: Trying to tackle entire studio in one weekend Why it backfires: Leads to overwhelm, half-finished systems, giving up The Fix: Start with one category Quick tip: Focus on most-used supplies first I begin by making piles of everything that’s out on my tables, sorting and throwing out what I can. Seeing clean surfaces inspires me to open drawers and start organizing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Studio Organization Mistakes That Are Hurting Your Creative Flow (And How to Fix Them) - Mistake #3: Ignoring Your Actual Creative Process</image:title>
<image:caption>The Problem: Copying Pinterest-perfect studios that don't match how you work (all vintage, open space…) Why it backfires: Beautiful systems you never maintain (I do not want to worry about spilling paint) The Fix: Organize by frequency of use and natural workflow Quick tip: Place most-used supplies within arm's reach of workspace As a collage artist, I’m inspired by my materials. As much as I love having all my papers organized in flat files, I need to have some visible in the studio. They add beauty and provide me with ideas.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Artist Talk for Impressions - Let’s start with one of my favorites, Leave No Stone Unturned. The large areas of green are on pages removed from a railroad ledger book from the ‘20s. The book is massive, and every page accounts for the finances of one year of the company: lines, numbers, and beautiful handwriting. It isn’t rare or historically significant, but now, printed with paint and used in a collage, it becomes interesting. The text from another book that I added was abstracted to look like railroad ties. This wasn’t a purposeful decision, but something I noticed after the piece was complete. The papers direct the composition when I get out of the way. What once was an accounting record has become a piece about journey and destination.</image:title>

<image:caption>And I can’t help but add my stories to the pieces, both as I’m composing them and once they’re complete and ready for the world. The title “Fingerprints” came from the texture in some of the papers, reminding me of preschool art projects where my son’s little hands were pressed into poster paint and stamped onto construction paper for mother’s day cards.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When I was a middle school teacher, I was constantly handing out bookmarks to my sixth graders, telling them not to fold the pages, which is the opposite of what I did in this piece when I folded over the corner of a book page. The title Don’t Fold the Pages reminds me of what I thought once mattered and how much I’ve changed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Are Sketchbooks Real Art? - A sketchbook practice makes art feel less precious and fussy when you can do it anywhere, and that can translate into your studio practice. I don't get caught up thinking that the vintage papers are too good to use because a few minutes ago, I was chopping up ledger books and putting them in my sketchbook with a glue stick. In a sketchbook, it's easy to get into the creative flow, and the more I access that feeling, the quicker I get there when working on my “real” collage art.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Write Your Way to Better Art Conversations - Beginnings- Version 1</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s a rainy Monday morning, and I’ve left my gloomy studio to visit an antique store in search of inspiration. I like this one because each vendor stuffs their shelves with a hodgepodge of items, so it’s a true treasure hunt. On the second floor, behind a locked glass door, I spot a stack of old paper tied with string. Receipts? Bending down, I crane my neck to look at the price, which is hidden underneath the papers and written in the smallest possible writing. I have the clerk unlock the case and find that the papers are canceled checks from the 1800s. There are bank names, lots of inky stamps, and beautiful handwriting. These aren’t something I can leave behind, especially for ten dollars. These papers carry a story that will continue in my next piece.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Write Your Way to Better Art Conversations - Beginnings- Version 2</image:title>
<image:caption>My work starts with the accumulation of materials. I search antique stores, library book sales, estate sales, and online sources for old paper. I'm interested in vintage books and ephemera that readers and time have marked because they have stories. The letter someone wrote from college in bright green ink to an old friend inspires the color palette for a collage and becomes part of the composition. That’s a much better use of old papers than discarding them. Sourcing these old papers, and choosing which ones I’ll use for my next collage is the starting point for each abstract collage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Out here, we wear clothes reworked, repurposed, and held together with patches and clever stitching. The fashionable among us are those most talented with their needles. We long for beautiful clothes; we look for any beauty in this dusty prairie. A cousin from back East promised to send us an entire box of women’s magazines that she had been saving for a year. It has finally arrived, damaged, but here. My sister and I carry it home, taking turns, because it’s heavy. She wants to open it right now, but I don’t want the wind to carry away the papers. At home, we open the box on the kitchen table. A small mouse blinks up at us from a nest made of word fragments. She’s made the best of what she has.” © Sarah Z Short, 2025, “Woman’s Woe”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Artists Should Write: Breaking Through Creative Blocks - I reach for my sketchbook and for the same 1938 Women’s World magazine that inspired my last collage. Five minutes later, I have a collage. In my journal, I write half a page of notes about what I’m thinking as I look at the collage and remaining text on the stove advertisement I used for the piece. The notes become a paragraph of text:</image:title>
<image:caption>“I’m happy, so happy. The products I need are at my fingertips for this perfect life. Beauty and ease, that’s what matters. And look, my husband bought me a new stove. Cookies?”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - A Week of Words: The Benefits of Keeping a Daybook - The Invisible Business of Art</image:title>
<image:caption>I wonder if anyone has read the Daybook entries and thought, "No, I do not want that." I suspect that very few working artists (as in those trying to sell their art) spend five days a week in the studio. That would require a team of hires responsible for the invisible business tasks. Much of my productivity comes from my “team” of Artwork Archive, Kit, QuickBooks, ManyChat, Tailwind, WeTransfer, Squarespace, Whitagram, Artrooms, Shippo, Adobe, and Canva! It makes my head spin to think about how I had to learn all these programs and continue to leverage them for my business. It’s interesting to see which ones I use most often (Artwork Archive!).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rhode Island isn’t a big state, and I’ll practically drive across it by the time the day is done. I’m headed to a Providence gallery to drop off three pieces they’ll be showing for the next few months. The gallery has a solo show up for a local artist who mixes collage with painting and walls of art from other artists (that must be where my pieces will go). <image:title>Blog - Artist’s Daybook: Wednesday - Back in the studio, I revise the first of the two 16" x 16" pieces. I'm able to layer more papers over the lumps, which smooths those out and creates another place of small detail.</image:title>
<image:caption>The second piece results in a "seriously, Sarah" moment. The areas to revise are in the same section as the first piece because I somehow create paired pieces with matching grid structure compositions. The lumps in this one are more serious, and I take out a T-Square and Exacto knife and excise a large section. Flipping through the flat file drawers, I cut and audition multiple papers before settling on a solid block of gray.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Artist’s Daybook: Tuesday - With my extra time, I start tidying up the studio.</image:title>
<image:caption>There are two massive mounds of collage papers from all the pieces I've been working on for the past two months. I sort through them, separating the good scraps, which end up in a plastic tub, the trash scraps for the garbage, and the super good, large pages, which are color sorted back into file folders. Some new prints are too large for file folders, but I have one empty drawer in my flat files for those. It's hard not to get distracted by great scraps and use them immediately.</image:caption>

I pull enough papers for several collages and put back the shades of blue that are too dark for this composition.</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece comes together quickly, and I put it aside to dry. I'm unsure if some of the text will be visible after the matte medium dries, and I may need to revise that area.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Artist’s Daybook: Tuesday - The next piece is underway. I choose a few pieces, and mind wandering, start to glue, only to find that it's a delightful composition. Why are some pieces this easy and others a fight? Could it be the break I just took?</image:title>
<image:caption>False alarm- the piece is not good, and I'm in the same mess I always get into. I trust I can figure it out. I did.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Artist’s Daybook: Monday - During my coffee break, I flip through a book about Kurt Schwitters and one on Sophie Tauber-Arp.</image:title>
<image:caption>I read an essay about Tauber-Arp's art-making during World War II as a refugee. Tauber-Arp, without a studio to work in, turns to colored pencils and paper, creating abstract line drawings. The need for creativity is so strong.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Artist’s Daybook: Monday - I neglect social media and decide to post, but it takes forever to find the images I want on my phone, and then I can't think of a caption. Nothing. My mind is blank and out of creative energy.</image:title>
<image:caption>Using this to my advantage, I write a story fragment: "Staring at her phone, she types, erases, then types again. Maybe she should call? How quickly she's forgotten that's an option in this day of messaging." I sit with my phone for the next ten minutes, in case I need to reply to a comment - I have to keep the engagement algorithm happy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This was my least favorite of the three. Twenty minutes was too much time because I rushed to compose the piece and then had all this time to fiddle with the composition, but not enough time to edit the entire piece. I like the details on the left side, but ran out of time to fix the other areas.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Sifted - In the landscape of abstract art, you begin in unfamiliarity—a world of colors and shapes that only sometimes make sense. This is your call to adventure: to look beyond the surface, to lean in closer.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Sifted - What begins as disorientation becomes personal. Each piece holds fragments of memory: a glimpse of an old book page, a fragment of text, the handwriting in a letter. These are not just materials but memories transformed. <image:title>Blog - Playlist: Art Tutorials - Art-making should be accessible and joyful, not shrouded in mystery or reserved for those with formal training. That's why I've gathered my most helpful art tutorials in one place. These guides break down creative techniques into manageable steps, whether you're interested in experimenting with printmaking, exploring natural dyes, or creating mixed-media collages. From quick 20-minute projects to more involved processes like letterpress printing at home, each tutorial aims to demystify a different artistic technique while encouraging experimentation. I've included fundamentals like color mixing and practical finishing techniques, as well as more unusual approaches like rust dyeing and plant-based fabric coloring. These tutorials reflect my belief that everyone can create meaningful artwork with the right guidance.</image:title>

<image:caption>With my 100 collage challenge, each piece was usually made with a single magazine page. This left me with a tray of scraps from multiple pages. Every so often, I’d create a piece using just those scraps. For Not That Simple I used the scraps that were left on my table after finishing other works. I wanted to see if I could replicate a scrappy magazine collage as a larger work.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Story Behind Stories Told - Two Tone, 20” x 16” x 1/8”</image:title>
<image:caption>My story: “Would anyone answer if she called? Would it be Jenny?” My inspiration: Faintly seen on the left side are some numbers- 867. This reminded me of the song “Jenny” with the lyrics of 867-5309. The song was written and performed by Tommy Tutone.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Story Behind Stories Told - That Recent Complaint, 16 x 16 x 1.5 in</image:title>
<image:caption>My story: "The weekly newspaper was a treasure. Take today's front page story, which began with, "There was that recent complaint that prize pigs..." Before she'd read the rest, she'd found her husband in the barn, and as he mucked out the pig pen, she'd read him the article. They certainly didn't want anyone complaining about their prize pigs." My inspiration: I used a book page that included the sentence: “There was that recent complaint that prize pigs…” I have no idea what they were complaining about, but I could not cover up this sentence. I like to imagine someone leaning in to read this sentence and laughing (and probably puzzled as to why it’s there). Writing the story for this one was easy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Mixing Unique Paint Colors - I bought some used Pantone books, because that's what I saw letterpress printers doing, and went to work.</image:title>
<image:caption>Total fail. Pantone books do not work for mixing acrylic paint colors. You need a scale to measure out your colors, and certain mixes of color to begin with (and what is transparent white??). I tried to get close to the colors in the books, mixing little bits of this and that on my tempered glass, but ended up with either mud or colors that were nothing like what I wanted.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Scrap Paper- Keep or Toss?</image:title>
<image:caption>Last week, I faced down my studio table, determined to deal with the mess. I sorted out the good stuff and mostly got them back where they belonged. There were one or two that were the only examples of a certain color of paper and I didn’t feel like taking out every single file folder, so I just shoved them into a close enough/good enough category. The small scraps that weren’t at all pretty went into the trash, leaving me with a manageable pile.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 100 Collages - Here’s how my 100 Collage Challenge works:</image:title>
<image:caption>I have a cafeteria tray in my living room with two vintage magazines, scissors, glue sticks, an old magazine to glue on, and some printmaking paper ripped down to 8” x 6” squares When I’m feeling inspired, I take the tray and make a collage (or 2, 3, 4…). I can sit on the floor, the couch, move upstairs, outside… It’s a no mess, portable art project When I have a stack of seven, I film a video where I flip through the collages This becomes an Instagram Reel where I number them (1-7/100) I’m using the materials I already have and not buying anything new I spend a maximum of 15 minutes on one collage If I never finish the project, no one will notice or be bothered (not even me)</image:caption>

I wanted them to dance together and apart. That experience, of being caught up in the materials and looking for direction was part of the story of every piece.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For example, this collage, Early Childhood is from my most recent collection. I thought it was going to be one of the first pieces to sell because it’s been so admired on Instagram (4,000 likes, 293 saves, and 63 comments). But it’s still available. This makes me wonder about my pricing, photography, and marketing or whether my followers are just clicking buttons without really meaning it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Vintage Maps and Player Piano Rolls</image:title>
<image:caption>The first thing I found was vintage plat map books, which were being sold by a firm that was downsizing their office space and couldn’t keep all of them. They are massive! The maps are all backed with fabric (either linen or cotton), and they are separated from each other with what look like the largest ruled index cards you’ve ever seen. If you’ve purchased stencils from me, I’ve been packing them in pieces of those index cards.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Vintage Maps and Player Piano Rolls - I also can work with no substrate and create assemblages. The maps are visible on the back.</image:title>
<image:caption>These might prove to be a little tricky to frame, but it could be as simple as floating them between two sheets of acrylic. When you get tired of looking at one side, all you’ll have to do is flip it over to the map side.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Vintage Maps and Player Piano Rolls - My son and I spent a few hours unloading and sorting them. I was delighted that there were even some unusual colors in these boxes. <image:caption>I went through every box, drawer, and stack in my studio in a ruthless quest to get rid of as much as I could. All the odd little bits I was saving just in case are gone. I did not need twenty plastic container lids or stacks of old magazines. I sorted everything into three piles: keep, donate, and recycle. <image:caption>When I started my 100-Day Project in December, I planned to experiment with many different types of printmaking: monoprinting, letterpress, collagraphy, woodblock, and linocut prints. I did a little of those, but I loved letterpress printing so much that it took over.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Things I tried: Metal and wood type Different types of paper: vintage book pages, printmaking papers, drawing paper, fabric book covers, postcards, and mixed media Woodblocks made from scrap wood, lumber store finds, and MDF board Different paints: soy-based printmaking ink, heavy body acrylic, open acrylic, fluid acrylic, expensive brands, and the inexpensive stuff Painted and unpainted papers Super simple compositions Lots of layers Masking Using different ways to set the type on the bed of the press</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Lessons Learned from 100 Days of Printmaking</image:title>
<image:caption>Letterpress printing can fill an entire day or can be squeezed into a few spare moments of time. Printing the way I favor doesn’t take the same mental energy as collage and lets me splash paint around so that I feel like I’m playing. This is the third 100-Day Project that I’ve completed, and I think it’s the one that has taught me the most.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Two years ago, I bought my first set of wooden type here. There was a plastic bag with a letter taped to the outside filled, tucked onto the bottom shelf of a locked glass case. I got that case unlocked and sat on the floor while I pulled out letters. I didn’t even have a press yet! Since then, I’ve found a few other letterpress cuts, but never anything as exciting as that first collection. I look in the case every time I visit, just in case.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Shopping Vintage - A vintage easel and a toolbox? Be still my heart.</image:title>
<image:caption>I don’t paint, but old easels are so beautiful. I have such a weakness for metal storage and one of my favorite pieces is a red four-drawer tool box that I found here. They are far more satisfying than plastic storage, and estate sales and vintage stores often have them priced inexpensively. One day, I’m going to find a set of vintage metal flat files.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Instagram introduced me to Provisional Press, a small business that began creating tabletop printing presses during the pandemic. I immediately put myself on the waitlist and waited patiently until I was able to purchase the kit. My husband kindly built the press and I was off and printing stacks and stacks of collage paper. The random assortment of letters I had meant that I couldn’t print many words, but I preferred the abstracted text and individual letters I could create.</image:caption>

I’ve found them at vintage stores, the Brimfield Antique Show, and Artifact Antiques on Instagram. Through Facebook Marketplace, I purchased a full set of letterpress furniture. I hardly needed that, as I could use magnets to hold the type in place on my small press, but it was just so beautiful.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What unites a collection? - I’ve been trying to figure this out as I started working on something new. I wanted to create collages that used the fabrics I had dyed. I had materials and a color palette, but that’s it. I decided to create a lot of small works on paper (6x6 inches) that I could pin up on the design board. I could work with small pieces of the fabric, try lots of compositions, and decide what other materials complemented the fabric. If I had works that I especially loved, I could mount them to panels.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - What unites a collection?</image:title>
<image:caption>These comments require that artists trust themselves. We begin with an idea that we explore and stretch as far as we want. The links will develop or, as we start to notice them, we can choose to develop the ones that are coming through most strongly. This is both comforting and terrifying. It’s lovely to think our ideas will work out for us, but it’s also a little scary to put that much trust in our process.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This all began because I had left my rust water bin outside and all the water and vinegar had evaporated. I was left with this gorgeous layer of rust. I’m using a plastic masonry tub that is one of my favorite art supplies. I use it for lots of projects, although I might need a new one after all this rust has settled for good.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’d add a layer of paper to the water and then gently push it down with the vinegar bottle. This meant that I wasn’t soaking the papers, but instead encouraging some pattern and movement. I was really hoping to see the circles stay on the paper. I did this until I was out of paper.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I picture an artist, flipping through a magazine looking for images with a forgotten bottle of cleaner in her hand. She finds the perfect picture, and in her excitement, accidentally squeezes the trigger and sprays the page. She’s so angry that she’s lost the image that she slams the magazine closed. Returning later, she finds the image transformed. The process really is that easy, but I’ve failed to do it correctly every time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Natural Brushes</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most successful projects was the natural mark making tools we made. We would wander around the woods and collect pine needles, grasses, leaves and mosses that we’d attach to sticks with rubber bands. They weren’t particularly pretty to look at, but it was a fun project when we really needed things to do. The pine needle brush turned out to be long lasting, and we still use it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A few months ago, I took Leslie Rottner’s brushmaking class on the Jean Oliver network. I’ve taken Rothner’s two other collage classes, and finally had the time to commit to this one. It’s a good one and if you have any interest in mark marking and working with handmade tools, you’ll want to give this one a try.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Natural Brushes</image:title>
<image:caption>Rothner’s class involves instructions for two types of brushes. One style is similar to my first attempts where the materials are taped and wrapped to the ends of sticks. The majority of the class is on a brush style that takes quite a bit of effort but with wonderful results. I find interesting branches and, following her detailed instructions, remove the bark, sand, wax, drill and adhere repurposed bristles to create something new.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Working with Vintage Papers - Today, I finished a small collage for day twenty-eight of my Hundred Day Project. I have two carts full of boxes of book parts in every color next to my studio table, but I worked only out of one bin. The variations of a single neutral white, when time is added, are beautiful: the browning of a newspaper, the mellow gold of book pages, and the marks of water stains all effortlessly complement each other. The black text and lines of these pages were my starting point, as I figured out ways to cover up some lines and balance others.</image:title>

<image:caption>I purchased an awl to use for bookbinding, but use it more to add small textured details to my collages. I can scratch lines or pierce the papers to create tiny holes. I also use it to create guide marks when I want to stitch into my finished collages. I like the rounded, wooden handle because it’s more comfortable than the thin metal types.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Straight Lines - Walking around my house, you might notice that almost all the artwork hanging on the wall is slightly crooked. I’m never sure why this happens, but when they get looking too crooked, I tilt everything back. I wish it was such a quick fix in the work I’m creating. I’ve never been good at measuring or cutting. I’ve done some quilting and the finished quilts never have the beautiful straight seams. I love the quilts created in Gee’s Bend that never rely on straight lines and still are beautiful. One reason I love college is the freedom to have odd shapes, ripped pieces and the freedom to make a controlled mess. There are sometimes where I do really need a straight line.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Straight Lines - While doing my ICAD project, I wanted my small collages to be stored together instead of having stacks of slippery cards. I snagged a new mixed-media sketchbook and decided to draw in a 4 x 6 rectangle to keep me to my required size. This is really helping me keep my lines straight and provides a little wiggle room if I need to go over the edges a bit. Those extra bits can be cropped out when I scan the image.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - String Pull Painting Experiment - I’m not sure I even like the final result, but it’s a reminder that so much of what is fun about art is the process of experimentation and play. I ask myself, “What happens if I….?” and keep pushing forward. Often, I push too far and end up with something unidentifiable that ends up in the garbage, but sometimes, like with this one, I have something new that might work really well if I just keep expanding on the original idea.</image:title>

<image:caption>The 100 Day Project was, in hindsight, really challenging. When I posted my first Index Card a Day post (ICAD) my husband asked, “Are you doing another daily challenge? Why? <image:title>Blog - ICAD- Another Daily Challenge</image:title>
<image:caption>The sixty-one little collages I will create don’t have to happen over sixty-one consecutive days (that’s the official length of the ICAD challenge). I can batch them together and post three on the same day. I can even be really sneaky and make a bunch at once and post them on separate days. There are no rules but the ones I make for myself. I could use the daily prompts, but that is too much pressure and I’m trying to escape demands, not create more for myself.</image:caption>
